What is gratitude?
According to Robert Emmons of the Greater Good Science Center, gratitude is an affirmation of goodness combined with recognition of the sources of this goodness as being outside of ourselves. We affirm that there are good things in the world, gifts and benefits we’ve received, and we acknowledge that other people or higher powers (if you’re spiritual) gave us gifts to help achieve the goodness in our lives.
Benefits of gratitude
Many studies document the social, physical and psychological benefits of expressing gratitude. Here are a few of the top research-based reasons for making this practice a part of your life.
- Increases happiness. Expressing gratitude boosts feelings of optimism, joy, pleasure, enthusiasm, and other positive emotions.
- Improves health. Gratitude strengthens the immune system, lowers blood pressure, reduces anxiety, depression, and symptoms of illness. It makes us less bothered by aches and pains.
- Increases resilience. Gratitude has been found to help people recover from traumatic events, including Vietnam War veterans diagnosed with PTSD.
- Promotes better sleep. Grateful people get more hours of sleep each night, spend less time awake before falling sleep, and feel more refreshed upon awakening. Instead of counting sheep, count blessings.
The benefits of gratitude also work for school-age children. When 10-18 year olds practice gratitude, they report greater life satisfaction and more positive emotions. They feel better about their school work, and they feel more connected to their community.
As the saying goes, a little gratitude goes a long way. And now we have research to prove it. This year, express your cheer and good will through words and acts of kindness. A heart felt gesture can leave a long lasting impression. And if you still want to give a store-bought gift, be mindful of where you spend your dollar. The same item may be a little less at a big box store, but your purchase will be far more valued and appreciated at smaller independent retailers.
